Black ceramics and tableware

Cepļi

Skulte parish, Limbaži Municipality, Latvia

Cepļi is the studio of ceramic artist Ingrīda Žagata, who first worked with clay at the age of twelve, graduated from Riga School of Design and Art in 1984, and founded her workshop near the Baltic coast in 1985. For Žagata, ceramics is both work and a way of life, shaped by Latvian pottery traditions and the meadows, forest, and sea around the studio. The workshop makes tableware, interior pieces, and garden ceramics by hand. Many pieces are thrown from Latvian clay, engraved, and fired at about 1050°C in an open-fire kiln using the traditional black, smoked reduction technique. Flame and smoke create the silver-black variations that make every vessel distinct. Since 1996, Cepļi has also welcomed visitors for demonstrations, workshops, and kiln openings, passing on knowledge through practice.
